Does Psi Sigma Alpha have the same prestige in competitive DO programs as Alpha Omega Alpha in MD programs?

No, he/she is talking about Psi Sigma Alpha. Sigma Sigma Phi is a service society. If I had to take a wild guess I would say that it is "somewhat" equivelant to AOA, being that it shows your are in the top 20% of your class. On the other hand, being top 20% of your class is the only requirement to get in, unlike AOA which takes other things into consideration.

I think that any time you can list that you were accepted into a select group of students for your academic abilities, it will reflect well on your application.

Hello! Does anyone has any further information on Psi Sigma Alpha, or a website link? My classmates and I cannot seem to find any information online about Psi Sigma Alpha.

You don't need to bump 20 threads. The fact you can't find anything should tell you how useless it is.
SDN needs to add a laugh button...

For real though, I’ve heard that the screening function assigns a “point” system to the applications and so having things blank is generally not ideal. So at least it gives you something to put for “memberships in honors societies” am I right?

Opps haha sorry haven't been on SDN in a while kinda forgot the etiquette. But true thanks for your help!

That's a really good point. I'm nowhere near applying for residency, but even when applying for scholarships and thins of that nature, there is always an "Awards/Honors" section. I guess it can't hurt to have that criteria filled in. Do you by any chance know anything about Psi Sigma Alpha yourself?

again...if nobody knows anything about it it probably ain't too important. Idk how the hints could be any stronger

It's useless. I know my friend who was a member didn't match. That's all I needed to know. No one cares about it. People care about your board scores.

A little digging and it appears to be an AOA type thing they tried to build up to reward academics and it clearly didn’t take off. Nothing about in ten years, looks like maybe 1 or 2 schools still give the award, my guess is most PD’s have never heard of it. SSP is the only somewhat known honors group from DOs. If you’re a 1st year and able, write the stupid essays and go to the stupid events so you can get the stupid line on your CV. If I were a PD I would look at that and go “oh wow, you wrote a couple of paragraphs and went to a club meeting... congrats”

I met a director who was over several residencies in a hospital in NY. I told him I was interested in a couple of the specialities, and he said 'tell me your grades' so I did, but then he was like 'no, tell me your comlex and usmle.' Then he followup with a question if my score was on first attempt. I asked him if he cared about my grades, straight up told me no (which I already knew, but its nice to confirm).

The only honor society that can help you is AOA, and DO schools don't have it.
