I checked out the thread on books, but I want to hear strictly about books that fit in my white coat. What would you recommend? Stahl's Prescribers guide would be nice, but does it fit in a white coat? What else is a must buy to carry around?

I can't walk around with empty white coats. I feel naked without books and how else would I build up my traps/shoulder muscles? 😀

Unfortunately Stahl's Prescriber's Guide won't come anywhere near fitting in a pocket. It weighs over 2 lbs...

For carrying in my pocket, I am a longtime fan of the "Current Clinical Strategies" series. The one for psychiatry is pretty good. I also carry my Tarascon Pharmacopoeia everywhere I go.

I also liked Current Clinical Strategies for psych. It was great for the clerkship... but, is there anything else that's helpful for intern year, especially for the inpatient unit or ER during calls?

The new MGH Residency Handbook of Psychiatry is tiny and packs a lot of info. In terms of Stahl's Prescriber Guide, there's a version for the iPhone and other smart phones available through Skyscape: http://www.skyscape.com/estore/ProductDetail.aspx?ProductId=2209. Haven't tried it yet but will definitely consider for residency. I used the Skyscape 5 min clinical consult for 3rd year and it rocks 👍

For psych I'd go with the current clinical strategies psychiatry 2010 and handbook of psychiatric drugs 2008.

I also picked up their internal medicine pocket book, which from what I heard pretty much gives you the admit orders(labs, meds, etc.) provided you know what you're dealing with (haven't really looked through it too much yet). Lastly Pocket Medicine: The Massachusetts General Hospital Handbook of Internal Medicine, which will give you the rest of the info you'll need for those few months on IM and ER.

That will give you the majority of info you'll probably need immediately in a pocketbook form. Grand total for all four is about $80-90.

I got pretty annoyed with this problem, so just put together my first iphone app "Psych Dx." Hopefully will be clinically useful to a variety of clinicians and to students.

Agree. I have Stahl's, DSM-IV-TR and all kinds of other skyscape goodies in my iTouch. Lift weights in the gym.
