Hey y'all,

MS3, IMG here looking at psych residencies. I've browsed the forums, Frieda, and websites for several weeks now looking for the training that each offers. I have not found any key source to assess which programs are more bio heavy/more therapy heavy/mixed. My personal app will include an about national avg Step1 with no further scores yet, experience in private psychotherapy training, but also decent rotations so far.

I'm looking for feedback from the populous here on which programs may have a preference (or if they all do x, y, or z).

For personal interest, I am looking to understand the ins and outs of bio including a questioning of future/historic treatments...then to master its usage to the bare minimum, thus using therapeutic methods. I am looking at the Pacific/Mountain areas for location (but others may have similar questions across the states).

I appreciate the feedback and advice,

Cheers

People usually do talk about the educational balance or lack of it in programs in the interview trail threads here on the forum every year. There really are a lot of great programs.
Other than that, I would just apply broadly and talk to people on the interview trail in person. It wasn't hard to figure out program biases in person if I paid attention.
I would recommend applying and interviewing everywhere you can afford, because to me, there is just no substitute for meeting people in person and seeing for yourself.
If I hadn't interviewed so broadly myself I would have never ended up at my first choice, as it wasn't even on my radar as a med student at all. I'm so glad that happened!
It has been beneficial down the road as it jump started my networking as a professional, put faces to names in print, and continues to inform my choices about where and how I choose to practice.

Excellent points, thanks for the response. I'll keep my options open and get some first-hand experience.

from my experience, could be dif for others...
most therapy emphasizing programs will advertise this fact (ex: SUNY Upstate). also depends on the type of therapy you are interested in (ex: a few programs are associated with a psychoanalytic institute, def not something what you find across the board). you can also consider the faculty (ex: University of Washington has Dr. Marsha Linehan mother of DBT so you can get great DBT focused training there).
