Since the new mcat is going to have a new section of psychology/sociology would it be a good idea to get a psychology major to have that knowledge to your use? Thank you

If you actually love Psychology, I say go for it, but only do it if that's what your passionate about. The new MCAT will have psychology in it, but to focus your major solely for the purpose of that additional MCAT knowledge would be overkill. Keep in mind if you major in something you'll be required to take a ton of upper-division coursework in that major, much of which is going to be out of scope for the MCAT exam. It would be much wiser to pick something you love, and add an into to psychology course along with maybe one or two additional classes if any.

Psychology can be brushed up on pretty easily. I wouldn't dedicate the majority of your college education to it. Pick something you're interested in.

No.

Speaking as a social sciences major, looking through the MCAT guide indicates that being a sociology or psychology major will be about as useful to the MCAT as being a biology, chemistry, or physics major--which is to say, there will be sections where you have a minor edge, but not enough to compellingly say being any one of them is a better choice.

The advice remains major in what you enjoy and make sure you do well in the prereqs.

According to the AAMC, you can learn everything you need to know for the new MCAT section with intro psychology, intro sociology, and intro bio (behavior section)

Apparently you only need intro to psych for the new mcat, so no.

Of course its beneficial. Being a psych major will help you get to other test takers' heads on test day and get them to psych themselves out so that they do bad and lower the curve. :meanie:

I majored in psych because I've always been fascinated by human behavior. I'm curious how I'd do on the new MCAT.
