Does anyone know psychiatry residency programs with excellent psychotherapy training. I understand that some are more psychotherapy based then others.

Hi there -- for starters, people often mention Cornell (Payne Whitney) and Columbia. There are of course many others...

Sometimes smaller or lesser known programs (i.e., not just the big names) provide excellent psychotherapy training. Two I can think of from my interview trail are Maine Medical Center in Portland, ME and SUNY Upstate Medical in Syracuse, NY. Brown also is a very well balanced program, and they have a lot of research going on, too. I'm sure there are lots more, as well, but I just did a limited Northeast circuit so that's what I'm familiar with.

Sometimes those smaller programs get missed when people are thinking about which programs to apply to, and they often have really well trained psychiatrists who may have come out of the big universities or psychoanalytic institutes--and often they have a real committment to resident education rather than just research. And I think that's super important when it comes to learning how to be a good therapist: the attendings should want to get to know you, your strengths and weaknesses, so they can advise you better in your work with patients.

Just my 2 cents.

Duke stood out to me.

Also, I'll second Brown.

Thanks tomato, rpkall and BobA. I don't mind, both big and small programs are welcome.

The Medical College of Wisconsin (in Milwaukee). Affiliated psychoanalytic institute, 2nd year all outpatient with select dynamic cases followed through years 3 and 4, and a good mix of dynamic and other modalities.

There are a number of psychiatry programs in the Philadelphia area--UMDNJ Camden, Temple, U Penn, Drexel.....

But what makes that area stand out is The Beck Institute is there. What's so great about that? That's the place where Aarron Beck--yes THE Aarron Beck. He gives courses on CBT and you can get training under him if you're in the area.

But isn't that prestige just for the sake of prestige. Couldn't you get the same training by reading his books or from an attending at a "nonprestigious" program? ;)

True--heheh..all that talk of prestige in the other thread.

Hey, its a chance to learn CBT from the founder of CBT. The guy cares and teaches pretty well.
