Sometimes smaller or lesser known programs (i.e., not just the big names) provide excellent psychotherapy training. Two I can think of from my interview trail are Maine Medical Center in Portland, ME and SUNY Upstate Medical in Syracuse, NY. Brown also is a very well balanced program, and they have a lot of research going on, too. I'm sure there are lots more, as well, but I just did a limited Northeast circuit so that's what I'm familiar with.
Sometimes those smaller programs get missed when people are thinking about which programs to apply to, and they often have really well trained psychiatrists who may have come out of the big universities or psychoanalytic institutes--and often they have a real committment to resident education rather than just research. And I think that's super important when it comes to learning how to be a good therapist: the attendings should want to get to know you, your strengths and weaknesses, so they can advise you better in your work with patients.
Just my 2 cents.
