Hi guys, I was just wondering your thoughts on my prerequisite GPA. I'd like to apply this year and I've been retaking a bunch of preqs to get my grades up. Unfortunately since PTCAS takes every single grade even if you repeated a course, my PTCAS prerequisite will be around only a 3.03. However I know that every school has their own prerequisite courses and their way of calculating them. So I guess it will range from 3.0-3.4. My question is how big of a factor is the PTCAS prerequisite GPA? Because from the looks of it, every school seems to calculate their own prerequisite gpa...but I'm just getting discouraged at the PTCAS prereq GPA since it includes the classes that I did poorly in, even though I retook the class.

Thanks for your input!

3.03 is quite low. However, retake any prerequisite classes you have C's or below in. pGPA is crucial factor in the application process, I feel. Also, research the schools you decide to apply to. Some will replace grades with any retakes. Also, if your last 60 hours are above-average... that may help strengthen your application.

Just apply to schools that take the highest grade. I retook a lot of my prereqs, so my PTCAS pGPA ended up being 3.17 but could go anywhere from 3.5-3.9ish depending on where I applied. I don't think they look at the PTCAS calculations too hard. I've gotten quite a few interview invites.

Contact the schools you are interested in applying to. Despite comments from applicants that this is the most important metric, that is not always true. It is a very minor part of our admission scoring for example. We have never looked at PTCAS pre-req GPA, and calculate our own as we do highest grade. But such a minor part for us, that what a pre-req GPA is rarely makes much of a difference for our admissions. But we are just one school.

If the school has a method of calculating pre-req GPA that differs from PTCAS' method, then your PTCAS number doesn't really have any relevance to that school.

Every school weighs pGPA as well as everything else differently. That's why you ABSOLUTELY MUST RESEARCH each school very carefully. You may look good to one school and bad at another. You need to figure this out so you can strategically apply to the right schools. One of the biggest mistakes I see people on this site making is not thoroughly researching schools. Don't be one of those people.
