Hi Everyone,
I know many of you are MPH'ers, but I'm wondering if anyone out there has applied to PhD/DrPH programs for this upcoming Fall 2011? I have applied to several, and am thinking that maybe all of us could come together and create an "acceptance" thread....if there are enough of us out there. If not, maybe I could just get a feel of anyone who's applied to PhD/DrPH programs!?!

Thanks!

Hey Blondie!

I think we spoke the on the previous forum regarding individuals applying to PhD/DrPH programs. Have you heard any responses from any of your programs? If I remember correctly, you were applying to JHU, Columbia, Emory and a few others.

To my knowledge, I've seen very few PhD/DrPH applicants on here... or they are in the shadows.

Hey Blondie

I applied to 1 PhD program at Pittsburgh. My application was complete in October but still waiting to hear from them.. what programs are you applying to?

I think we are hiding in the shadows...😎

Hi Everyone,
I totally forgot about that past thread that I posted on several months ago. I've sent in ALL my applications and haven't heard anything yet from anywhere....I've gone through a bunch of my schools websites where I applied and didn't see any information on whether or not there are interviews for this type of degree. I'm assuming they would say something if there was....so, I feel like we all may be waiting until early Spring to hear anything 🙁 Hopefully I'm wrong about this.
I already have my MHS from JHSPH in Mental Health and applied to:

UConn -- PhD Social and Behavorial Health Sciences
Brown -- PhD Epidemiology (at CAAS)
Columbia -- PhD Biomedical Sciences
Emory -- PhD Behavioral Sciences and Health Education
JHSPH -- PhD Mental Health

Good Luck to everyone....and thanks for the link!

I applied to:
John Hopkins: Occupational and Environmental Epidemiology
Emory: Epidemiology
Harvard: Environmental Health with the hopes of jumping back into the Epi department for the dual doctorate.

I heard from John Hopkins that they are reviewing my app and I will hear by the middle of February... scary 😕

Since everyone else listed their programs, I'll come out of the shadows!

Applications:

U. Southern California: Health Behavior Research/Preventive Med
UCLA: Public Health-Community Health Sciences
JHU: Social and Behavioral Sciences
NYU: Public Health
Columbia: Sociomedical Sciences
U. Indiana: Health Behavior
U. Michigan: Health Behavior and Health Education
Medical College Wisconsin: Public and Community Health

Good luck to everyone!:luck:

Gah!
I meant Columbia -- Sociomedical Sciences

(I was at work when doing this earlier....)

Continuing the thread--

In addition to some MD/PhD, and MPH programs, I have also applied to straight PhD programs in public health related fields:

PhD-UMASS Amherst SPHHS, Environmental Health
PhD-Duke, Environmental Health / Toxicology
PhD-Cornell, Toxicology

Most of these programs, while varying anywhere between deadlines of Dec 15-Feb 1, when speaking to their administrative assistants, I found out that they don't really start forming adcoms and reviewing apps till mid Jan/ Feb. Most people hear within a month or so after they begin their reviews. This is generally the case for the three above schools and programs. Obviously, others will differ. On average these programs are quite competitive, with admission rates ranging from 20 ~5 %. Depending on the program. This is fairly typical for most PhD programs.

For most of these programs, while admission rates represent official admission by the graduate school, this does not necessarily correlate to matriculation. This is particularly the case, since finding professors that interest you, and professors who have funding and are accepting new students in to the labs is probably more important and more difficult than actually getting official acceptance by the graduate school. I mean, as an example, I have a friend who applied to Duke. He was accepted there. But, since he could not work out funding and find a professor with whom he could do his work, he didn't actually matriculate. So...keep these things at the forefront. My guess is that one should be proactive by contacting profs ahead of time, visiting the schools while adcoms are being formed, talking to various profs and students at various departments, and making some personal connections with people who will fight on your behalf when your app appears in front of the adcom.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed. Is anybody applying to any doctoral programs at YSPH/ JHSPH/ GW SPHHS ?

Good luck to everyone!!!

Does anybody know if most Public Health DrPH/PhD programs hold interviews? Or if you just hear whether or are accepted or not? I went through my schools websites and didnt see anything about interviews....but that was surprising to me....

To my knowledge it does vary by program. I know a few of the programs will request an interview of candidates, while others may not. I echo the thought that it is important to have contact with potential advisors. There was one school I wanted to apply to; however, the faculty member knew he would not have funding at the moment to sustain a PhD student.

Hopefully we will all hear things soon! 😀

Anyone in the forum applying to PhD programs in public health in Canada?🙂

Hey Mezmerized

I am applying to Canadian schools but just for masters though

Hey guys, I'm a newbie to this section of SDN.

Currently finishing up my MPH in epi at Texas A&M (only practicum left :soexcited:).

Applying to the DrPH program for epi at A&M and UT's PHD for epi, as well as Vet School at A&M.

I'll throw my info in the ring. I applied to Harvard, BU, UNC and UWash for EH/OH. Had an issue with Sophas losing a transcript, but apps are in and haven't heard anything yet.

Has anybody heard anything from PhD programs yet? Just getting a little antsy😳

I know Duke's EH program will be reviewing apps this week, and will be notifying students on Friday and Monday. Cornell will be reviewing apps next week, and will be notifying students in the next few weeks as well. I'm not sure about some of the others. Good luck to everyone!

Thanks Toxman, that was helpful. Blondie, that's a very cool website, thanks for sharing. Keep us posted everyone. Good luck! 🙂

I applied MSPH to PhD in HBHE at UNC (so many letters!!). Good luck to all!

You applied to McMaster?? Did you contact a professor and/or write a dissertation proposal?

I applied to McMaster and Ottawa. I might also apply to Queens (the $100 application fee is a lot)

Well McMaster just asked to identify three professors I would like to work with and thesis topic in writing. I did not contact them personally, I just wrote a brief description why I would like to work with them. I also wrote a brief proposal for the thesis.

Ok cool! Keep me posted!

Got an email from Duke Integrated Tox and Env Health, with an invitation for an interview for the PhD program. Apparantly, they reviewed apps this week and have been sending out invitations Friday, and will be sending more out on Monday. I'm not sure how many students will be invited for an interview....looking at the class sizes from last year, 5 people were actually given admission. FML.

Congrats ToxMan!🙂

For everyone who hasn't been keeping up with Grad Cafe -- looks like a PhD applicant to the MMI program at Hopkins received an e-mail request for an interview.

Maybe this means the rest of the Hopkins departments will be following ..... ?!?! 😕

Another quick update:

Contacted UMASS SPHHS. For the PhD, they will not be reviewing apps (at least for the EH division) until the mid to end of February. This is according to the administrative assistant who handles the apps at the school. So, there you have it. I guess the moral is: Sit tight and don't worry about your app for at lest a month or more if you applied to UMASS Amherst.

I saw on Grad Cafe that Emory had sent out interviews on the 9th of Jan...I'm not sure if this is valid or not (since on the Clinical Psychology message board false posts of interview invites have been posted). Anyone know?

There have been additional results on gradcafe. I can't believe people would post false results! Geesh 🙁

Blondie,

You're in New Haven, CT now, and I see that your list of PhD programs didn't include the program at YSPH. Do you have any particular reason not to apply to YSPH?

Just curious

Drink,
Yes! I am in New Haven -- my research interests didn't match up with anything at YSPH -- I'm very interested in behavioral/social/mental health policies/interventions and unfortunately when I looked at what YSPH had to offer, it wasn't a good fit for me. Of course, if it was a fit -- I would have ABSOLUTELY applied!

Checked gradcafe. I guess Yale has started to notify people.

Hi mezmerized7,

May I ask where did you see the post on gradcafe that Yale started to notify people? I can not find any such post.....

Well, I applied and did not hear anything from them, I guess I am in the rejection pool then....sad🙁

Hi ningyao,

The link to the website is below. It does not necessarily mean you were rejected. Maybe they haven't contacted all interviewees as yet. Good luck and keep us posted.

It also seems like Tulane and UMichigan has also started to notify people. This is of course dependent on the program and or process that is used to contact interviewees.

Thanks, I found the post. yea, I wish they haven't contacted all interviewees as yet, thought it seems unlikely since they normally only select ~15 people for interview and pick a few from the interviewees. With such a small pool of interviewees, they may send out invitations all at one....

well, good luck to everyone and fingers crossed for my other applications.

Hi Gents and Gals,
Received my first informal acceptance via email (formal in mail) from Indiana University for their PhD in Health Behavior.

Hopefully everyone will begin to hear soon! :luck:

Congrats SMU!! Did you go in for an interview?

congrats SMU! how exciting!!

i know clinical psychology has made a list of acceptances for programs at the beginning of their thread, should we start making one for this thread, would it be helpful?

I didn't go for a formal interview. However, during the Fall I traveled to each of my top schools and met with potential doctoral advisors and their staff. It was sort of an informal interview and allowed me to spend the time touring the campus to make sure I'd want to even live in the area!

I'm waiting for formal acceptance and package in the mail, but IU is actually my top choice due to the research at the Center for Sexual Health Promotion and the Kinsey Institute.

Hey everyone! I also applied to PhD programs, in environmental health at four schools: Johns Hopkins, Harvard, University of Washington and UC Berkeley.

I am currently a MS student at Harvard in Epidemiology and want to either stay here or go to University of Washington (I'm from Seattle). So far, I have only heard from Johns Hopkins, inviting me to their recruitment weekend Feb 3-5. I do have a friend that works for the dean of the EH department at Harvard and she said they are still reviewing applications. I'm starting to get nervous though!!!

Another thread that might have some interesting information, too: http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?t=768295&highlight=phd

I'm currently a PhD student in Epidemiology + Environmental Health. If you have any questions, I'd be delighted to share any information.

Good luck!

Hi stories, how is the scope for MPH environmental Health?Job opportunities?sorry, this is not the right question for this thread.Thought you could answer better as you are a current student.

Blondie,

Thanks for your reply. I was just crious. I agree with you and many others that it's not worth applying unless your research is a good fit to what the program can offer to you (i.e. funding, advising, research and other opportunities, etc.) Ah.... This waiting game has been really painful. A day feels like a year. I should perhaps spend less time checking this website, which has been making me more nervous than ever.

Good luck to you!
