Medical Public vs. Private med school

How to decide between a highly ranked in state med school vs highly ranked private med school. Did not receive any financial aid from either of them

Easy. The cheaper one. T20 vs T10 is meaningless in the real world.

Agree generally cheaper is correct, unless you have a particular geographic reason to go somewhere else

The 50 year old you will thank you for going to the cheaper school.

Your salary as an attending will be the same as a grad at either one.

With current interest rates and a dim outlook for loan forgiveness, keeping your debt low is very important. There should be a compelling reason that fits your plan to be a physician to choose the more expensive option.

Could be a sweatshop. Ie, a malignant residency. These do exist.

It really depends on the school. I went to a place like this (SUNY Downstate for transparency) and it was honestly a great learning experience for a student. Lots of autonomy (probably more than I should have had) and I had a lot more hands on clinical experience going into my IM intern year than most of my co-interns who went to "better" med schools did.

I would not have wanted to be a resident at that program (and didn't even apply) but it was a great place to be a student.
