I was just informed that my name was published in a few abstracts and papers from studies I was working on last summer. I am applying to medical school this year and was wondering where I could put this information? I've already submitted my AMCAS and I don't think I can edit my work/activities... is there any way I can let med schools know about this? Thanks!

You can mention it in secondaries when schools ask if you have anything else to tell them, or you can incorporate that research experience into a secondary essay.

You can also include this information in an update letter, but it may be a little early in the season for that. Also, you should be aware that some schools don't want any extra information from you.

^agreed

Except schools will definitely want to know about this sort of "extra information." I doubt they will find your recent publishings superfluous.

Thanks for the fast responses!! Good advice, hopefully schools give me the chance to mention them 🙂

For sure, it's just that some schools specifically say that they don't want you to send any letters/emails like this.

Noted. In which case you should definitely make sure to thread it into your secondary, even if it reads as a shameless plug. They might find it offensive for a second, but then they will be impressed by the research.

Wait, maybe I missed it, but when you say your name was published in abstracts and papers, is this as an author, acknowledgement, etc.?

Author. I found it when I googled myself (embarrassing) and my Lab Director forgot to mention it to me. But I'm the third author in a list, not 1st or 2nd... so I don't know how important it may seem to adcoms.

Personally I'm not cool with people getting author credit for something they didn't write (in fact, unearned attribution is something I teach against in my Ethics in the Sciences class), but your PI might not care about that. You can send update letters to the admissions offices of the schools to which you've applied, indicating where the articles appeared. It's good to check with the admissions office at the schools to which you've applied to see how they prefer to get updates.

Science is just politics with a few PCR reactions. A sad, but very realistic truth.
