Sorry if this thread has already been answered, couldn't find it though.

I looked on a few websites and it looks like there are only 20 or so fellowships that offer purely pulmonary fellowships (and most of top IM residencies don't offer it). Anyone have any insight into how difficult it would be to set up a pulmonary fellowship without doing the CC component at a place that is offering a Pulm/CC fellowship?

Depends on if the accepting institution has funding for a pulm only position. To do only Pulm in a Pulm/CC spot is going to be very difficult, as there will be months of critical care time that will need to be covered if you take a combined spot. The only way to know is to e-mail/call the places you are interested in and ask. Otherwise, I would just apply to the Pulm only programs.
 
Anyone know why there are only 20 spots total for pulm only programs? It fills every year...how difficult is it to match into one of these spots?
