I had a lot going on today so I forgot to call my attending physician to see what time I needed to be at the clinic. We rotate at different sites and I had not been to this site yet. I heard from some other students that the meeting time was 9am but I wanted to be sure that nothing had changed. I figured I would just call in the morning but I started to get freaked out bc We've been having a rocky rotation with people not being where they are supposed to be and leaving early and arriving late.. and it occured that something could have changed between last week and this week and the attending could have wanted us there earlier...so I did the stupidest/craziest thing ever and called him at 10:56pm!!!!

. He was irritated and couldnt believe I was calling him. I apologized profusely and just explained that I wanted to make sure we were not late since so many of the students on the rotation have been doing crazy stuff like leaving while on call and not showing up at all..I didnt want to add to the problems and perception of the students on the rotation as being bad students who dont do what they are supposed to do. He did make a joke at the end of the conversation but I could tell he was pretty pissed.

THis has to the stupidest thing ever right? Just how bad do you all think this is? I am a MSIII on my first rotation. Have I pretty much shot myself in the foot? I know doctors from different departments talk to each other and share info about students :-(...I really just wanted to cover myself and not be late. I was my fault for being so distracted and not calling earlier.🙁

No way to tell really. Some attendings will take it out on your eval, some won't. It's done anyway, no use stressing about it, just show up to clinic and do your best. Don't spend half the day apologizing to him either, don't say one word about it. Just move on.

thanks for replying...im actually unable to go to sleep thinking about it and have to be at the 5:30 rounds before going off to that site...Im going to try and relax and get a few hours of sleep.

Hi...

In all honesty... its was a bit OCDish - but really no big deal. It may very well be that your attending was minorly pissed at the time - but will likely awaken the next day to find it semi amusing. Any rational attending will realize that it was done from a good place. Don't worry. Really.

Yeah, I'll agree with others' sentiments, this really shouldn't be such a big deal...take some xanax 👍

I once called a resident at 5AM to see where I needed to be. I'm still alive.

You sound a little like me in the beginning of the year. This doctor is NOT going to tell doctors from other departments. That just doesn't happen...in my opinion at all, but especially for little things like this. Next time, just show up at 8, since most clinics don't start before then.

Listen, this will come with a bit more experience, but you need to try to relax. If you freak out every time a resident or attending sounds annoyed, is harsh with you, or looks at you funny, you're going to give yourself a hard attack by the end of the year.

As long as it wasn't the chief, this really isn't that big of deal. Unless of course you were on something other than surgery or OB...

Not a big deal. If you see him by chance in the hall, apologize briefly. He will probably find it amusing the next day. It's good to be diligent, don't be OCD though hehe:laugh:

I made the same mistake. Called the chief resident while on ortho service (it was my first day, I figured surgeons were in the hospital by 5)

Wow I got a tongue lashing that still stings

But yeah, the guy was moderately cool with it 3 hours later so I wouldn't sweat it. (I mean, I didn't honor the course but hey, I also left everyday by noon. That might have had something to do with it)

What specialty?

In the future, the correct thing to do if you don't know what time the clinic starts, is to show up very early and wait.

Yep. Done that more than few times.

No big deal. If it comes up in conversation, laugh about it but all physicians receive phone calls at all hours (even dermatologists get wrong numbers). After all, you were just trying to be sure that you were where you needed to be and on time. Forget this and move on.

Relax. The only way to really destroy yourself is to stop sleeping and act like a ninny because of this.

Was it the brightest move? maybe not. Is it going to destroy your career? no.

Show up. work hard. Let it alone.

thanks ya"ll....Im on OB...it turned out okay. He brought it up, smiled and let it go. I am a bit ( a lot) OCD-ish ...I will take the advice given here🙂
