For d-school, I have my first choice and two other preferences after that. But beyond these 3 schools, I have absolutely no preferences. I would be happy going wherever as long as I'm not going bankrupt

My thought was that I would apply early (June/July) to five schools and hope that I can a pre-dec interview. Then apply a bit later to more schools, possibly in August/September (not sure when apps are considered 'late') and aim for a post-dec interview.

The only reason why I want to do this is to save money. If I get an acceptance to any one of my first three choices, then I'll go there. That way, I could withdraw my interviews/applications from other schools without actually having to travel and spending a large sum of money. Needless to say, the reasoning behind this idea is to save money.

I would appreciate any feedback on the idea. Thanks.

Why don't you just put all of your apps in early and if you get an interview to a school that isn't in your top 3, just schedule it for post December?

I think OP's intent is to only apply to the top 3 in order to save on the AADSAS (~$68/ each additional)+Supplemental(~$70)+DAT ($25) cost associated with each school. Its a pretty risky move, IMO, unless you have a 3.9 24/24/24. Not worth the risk. You might regret it later if it comes around to bite you in the rear.

He/she says "That way, I could withdraw my interviews/applications from other schools without actually having to travel and spending a large sum of money" so it sounds like they would be putting the apps in and spending money on them anyway right? If you're doing it just to save on travel to interviews, I would say apply to all early and then just push back any schools you're not interested in.

it would help if you can tell us what your preferred schools are (in order to know their competitiveness) and also your stats to see if you have good chance of getting in..

The ds in question might "purposely" decide to put your application in the "O" files.

you did not apply this cycle at all, did you?

It's ok to apply late if you're a SUPER applicant with like a 3.6 and above GPA and a 22 and above on the DAT, of course AND everything else that makes you a great candidate. Just a personal opinion, I think you're really putting yourself at a major disadvantage if you apply really late.
