Just want to get some advice on how a timeline would look for a D4 that has recently taken interest in the OMFS specialty. Here's my situation:
Starting D4 year, No CBSE taken, No externships, Fair number of extracurriculars, GPA 3.99, Rank 1/~100. Been on the fence about OMFS for a couple years, but recent clinical experiences have really boosted by interest.
From my understanding, my plan would include about ~3 externships this fall/winter, start studying now for CBSE in Fall, apply to non-cat when available, and hopefully apply to categorical positions in the 2026-2027 cycle.
I would greatly appreciate any and all feedback/insight into this situation from you all!

Hey, I am a first year OMS resident at a solid 4 year program.
I think your plan is great. It sounds like you have the extracurriculars and GPA to make a good applicant, so all you need is a good CBSE score and a few externships, and you'll be set to apply this time next year.
You will have to do a non-cat, which you already noted. Try to figure out where you'd like to do that and reach out to that program early (end of this year or very early next year).
I would also recommend doing your first externship ASAP. The only reason i say this, is so you can truly see what we do in OMS and you can confirm whether or not OMFS is for you. I would also recommend you start spending time with your home OMS program if they have one.
You have a year to get as solid CBSE score. Register and prepare to take in February next year. Most people don't do super well the first time, but given your GPA, you may be the exception to that rule. Don't be surprised if you have to take it again next July though.
It's a pretty simple path, but certainly not an easy one.
