Hello everyone! been lurking for a while, finally going to post!
Reason for posting is because I'm questioning some of work this far on this Pre-med journey.
About me: 25Y/o Hispanic, raised in low-income family, parents didn't finish high school.
After HS, I joined the Navy as a Hospital Corpsman. Did 3 years with the Marines, and 2 years in a family medicine clinic.
After my Tour in Afghan, I decided to take classes online/evenings/ weekends. And of course, I didn't to so well in my classes due to the military obligations.
I got married while I was in, and had my daughter.
The good:
-5yr Navy Veteran, with tons of medical exposure in the US and abroad in Afghanistan.
-Volunteered throughout my enlistment, and after at a level 1 trauma center
-Shadowed many Docs both MD and DO
-Personal statement is Great (from what I've been told)
-Great LOR's (6 so far)
-1 year of research(possible publication)
-Active with school clubs and TA-ing
-URM?
-Disadvantaged?

The bad:
-3.27cGPA/3.31sGPA (MD)
-3.4cGPA/ 3.46sGPA (DO)
-MCAT - have not taken yet (finding it hard to focus with everything going on right now)

The ugly:
-Convicted of DUI 7yrs ago. Now expunged.
-Currently going through divorce

Because of my current situation, I have reconsidered applying broadly due to needing to be close to my daughter. However, this will limit my chances for So-Cal MD schools, but I am also interested in DO schools.
My ultimate goal is to be an Emergency room physician.
As the time gets closer to apply, I am getting more nervous about my DUI closing possible chances at my dream. Also, my GPA, and location for applying.
I guess what I amd asking is what you guys think my chances are. As well as any advice for accomplishing this goal.
Thank you!!

Your cGPA and sGPA for osteopathic schools is solid. Once you have an MCAT score you will be able to determine whether or not you want to try for allopathic schools but the key will be applying broadly.

Thanks for the reply! Ultimately I wouldn't mind either. I have had the chance to see the good that comes from omm for some patients. Guess I have to keep my head up, and focus on this mcat!

Yes, do your best on your mcat and apply DO. You clearly have more experience in medicine and life in general when compared to most other applicants. Gives you a lot to talk about during interviews.

Someone correct me, if I'm wrong, but I believe that you don't need to disclose expunged misdemeanors on the AMCAS primary. (Not sure about AACOMAS.)

It is possible that individual schools may ask about it on secondary applications but I honestly don't think a DUI will hinder you in any way. If asked, be honest about it. Admit that you made a mistake and that you've learned from it. Assuming that you haven't had any other incidents, I think you'll be fine!

EDIT: https://www.aamc.org/students/download/182162/data/amcas_instruction_manual.pdf See page 33.

As for the DUI, even though your record is expunged, my guess is that medical schools and/or residencies and/or medical licensing boards will have access to your DUI. You may want to check with your state licensing board to see how the DUI may affect your ability to get a license to practice medicine. If that comes back clear, you will then want to check with residency programs to see how this may affect your ability to match. This is just my guess and I hope that someone who is much more familiar with the process will chime in.

First off, many thanks for your service to our country. Your veteran's status makes you a prized candidate, so I think applying to some MD schools is worth a shot, especially with a good MCAT score. Do NOT take the exam until you are 100% ready for it!

Not all Hispanics are URM...what community do you represent? And don't say "Brooklyn"!

Thank you for the advice! My family is Salvadoran, I am first in my family to pursue a college degree.

I don't believe that Salvadorans are considered URM, but Spanish language skills always are appreciated.
