So I'm curious about reporting a job in which someone may have worked under the table before actually being put on payroll. Should the time being paid under the table be put on the application as well?

AAMC and the IRS are only a few blocks apart. I wouldn't risk it.

this is a great question imo.

what if you have a fairly substantial job (30+ hrs/wk) but you are paid directly in cash, as in tutoring/teaching? i think a lot of people have these types of jobs; tutoring, teaching, pizza delivery (not on payroll), etc.., so i would definitely list it and not worry too much about the AAMC contacting the IRS

AAMC had better things to hunt down than this. 👍

Do aamc/medical schools really go so far as to check your tax information?

Seriously

Think about how many applications each school gets. Then all of them going through AMCAS. There's just not the time in the day, or the reason to care enough to investigate these sort of things.

AMCAS/University of X SOM isn't going to call a company and ask for your information/employment verification.

They also contact and interview friends and neighbors. Be careful what you put down, lying is very serious.

Yes. Include it in with the more formal employment duration. Adcomms won't ask for your pay stubs or copies of your IRS forms.

This.

4 out of my 6 jobs were under the table and I listed all. They were never brought up.

Sorry for piggybacking but what about internet jobs? Like running websites and making money from advertising. I made enough to pay for my college education, rent, food, travel, etc without having a "real" job when I was in school.

Other than that, I had no paid employment since high school

A real job is a real job. It doesn't matter whether you did it on the internet or whatever. People become millionaires on the internet. Also, much of this doesn't matter anyway because the IRS wouldn't even care unless you were raking it in. The IRS may be hated (especially now) but even they have better things to do than chase down poverty level students for not paying a few hundred dollars in taxes. The plane ticket to send the agent to see you would cost more than they'd get out of you in most cases. This is why so many people that make under 50k cheat on their taxes. The chances of being caught are almost nonexistent unless you do something a computer can catch like misreport a number from a W2 or 1099.

bravo to you!

and how on earth can you NOT consider this as a "real" job? a job (aka a service you provide in exchange for benjamins) is, well, a job.

and speaking of "not real" jobs, i've been working as a tutor/teacher for the past 10 months of so. this work is close to full time, and it is entirely "under the table", as in my supervisor pay me directly in cash. and like i said before, this is a very common thing among college students/recent grads.

That is illegal...

You should always report income, whether it is as a babysitter or gardening or freelance...

WAKE UP SHEEPLE!!!!!!

This whole application process has turned me into a neurotic mess. Three months ago I would have simply been amused. Now this type of comment causes me to look over my shoulder...
