I'm working on an article about military medicine for The New Physician magazine.

The focus will be on the culture of medicine in the military--what it is like on a day-to-day basis, how it differs from civilian medicine and how it has changed in the last five years--and feel free to correct any of my own assumptions about those changes.

I will probably keep direct "military medicine as career option" advice down to just a sidebar, but I'd still be interested on anyone's specific take on that.

Drop me an e-mail or give me a call at 703 620-6600 x212 if you have something you'd like to put on the record for our readers--mostly medical students, with some pre-meds and residents.

Regardless, thanks for your time.

Read this forum. You will get a lot of insight. Search my posts. I have spoken loudly on the culture of military medicine and how it distorts the delivery of healthcare, and how it prevents most good physicians from staying.

There are many posters....mostly students and residents...and a few with actualy experience over the last 5 years.

Read their posts, and you should get a good idea of what military medicine is all about.

If you're looking for someone that has been through the military medical wringer, and lived to tell about it, I'd be happy to offer you an anonamous interview for your article...send me a private message, and we'll get in touch.

just make sure you get all three services represented, and from different specialties. experiences in the military are, as you can tell from this board, widely variable.

I would appreciate it if you could just focus on the bitter, cynical types and go completely negative with the article. Then recruiting and retention efforts in the military medical corps would suffer (even more than it is today). Then Congress might decide to pay us more. I can't believe the ASP bonus hasn't changed in nearly 15 years. At least it's a non-taxable bonus... wait a minute. At least I have the freedom to practice medicine the "right way" irrespective of cost for procedures... wait a minute. At least the future of military medicine is bright... never mind that silly BRAC talk and funny abbreviations like PBD-712. Anyhow, just make sure the article is full of doom and gloom. I'm waiting for my bonuses to go up....... check back with me in another 15 years and I'll let you know if it worked.

The ASP is taxable. I think that I get about $9900 after taxes.

you could read the "memos" all over this sight, but you should probably interview somebody.

I already did get a "letter to the editor" of mine published in a military medicine journal.

You could interview me anytime.

please contact me for more info.
