QR book question

Greetings,

I was searching through Amazon.com, looking for books to help with my test retake in November. There were over 5 Schaum's reviews, all which overlapped stuff covered in the QR section. Short of buying 5 books that may not be very complete, have any of you come across a review book (aside from destroyer's, kaplan's, or Topscore's QR area) that worked well for you ?

Check with the library. I have seven Schaum's math books sitting next to me that were free and due back on Sept 9.

Honestly, they were way way way too much in depth to help that much for QR.

If I had to pick any book, I would say "How to Solve Math Word Problems for Standardized Tests" by David Wayne was pretty good. It doesn't hit everything, but many of the problems on my test were very much the "classic" type of word problems that you see over and over again. Knowing how to recognize and do those fast is important. But again, the book is far from perfect, just extra practice.

purplemath.com actually was helpful as well. It's not a ton of problems but their approach to actually solving the word problems I've used since. Especially for rate problems and work problems.

Kaplan GRE & GMAT was also decent for some more practice with basic stuff. It wasn't spot on and alot of it wasn't that applicable (not all stuff on GRE and GMAT is that close to the DAT), but a good 3/4 of the book was good, but maybe on the easy side a bit.

But really try to save the money on Schaum's books. I only was able to use them maybe five times for very specific questions I had, like what is arcsin or sin graphs. Other than that, they are way overkill.

! Forgot about the local library. Thanks for the reminder. I just ordered the word problem book, so I hope it helps in that preparation. Thanks for the advice.

I didn't mean to come off as complaining about my scores. Part of the reason I am retaking it, is to stand a better chance at some of the schools I have applied to. I can't change my GPA at this point, so the only swaying factor left to influence is the DAT. My inability to cut a wet mango before my last DAT left me with a deep gash in my writing hand when I took the exam. It probably hurt me the most in RC and GC, because I had trouble writing calculations and jotting notes on passages. Counting faces for the PAT cute section in my mind was also not fun. In fairness though, I probably would still have bombed QR even with a good hand.

If I'm fortunate enough to get interviews, I think I'll keep it to myself... i'd rather have them think I'm bad with numbers than bad with my hands 🙄
