QR no trig & geometry ??

The new DAT apparently is not supposed to have any trig & geometry according to the 2017 handbook, but I still see some people saying they have a few questions that pop up regarding those subjects. I don't want to allocate time for studying trig & geometry if there is a good chance less than 2 or even 0 questions might pop up on the exam for obvious reasons. Plus, it's not even supposed to be on the DAT according to the handbook so what game are they playing lol?

Thoughts?

Trig and Geometry are still on some versions of the DAT. I am monitoring it closely and should something change I will post immediately.

My classroom students take the test year round, and students across the country stay in touch with me. When they take the test I ask if they had Trig or Geometry. Most of them say yes, very few say no. Remember only a few students post on SDN, I work with a least a thousand students during the course of a year. We have 300 students studying with us the summer and a group of 100 just finishing..We are preparing our students as if they will encounter Trig and Geometry until future notice.

I just recently took my DAT about a month ago and I never had a single trig/geometry question on my exam. There was more data analysis and interpreting statements (yes, it was odd). The entire math section was a shock to me, I felt as if all my study materials were no longer up to date.

I would suggest still studying the trig/geometry, you never know what version of the exam you will get!

I understand, but how can they have trig/geom. when it's lacking in the handbook. Is this not grounds for suing them if you take the DAT in 2017? I should threaten them with a lawsuit so then they will surely have more consistent QR sections for all students without trig/geom : )

Just took the DAT last week. I would say that the format and difficulty were on par with the updated DAT bootcamp. DAT Destroyer was a great wake up call though that I really needed to invest some time studying for the QR.

From what I heard, there is not a dedicated Trig/geometry section on everyone's QR test like before; However, you may still be required to use Geom/Trig knowledge to solve problems in the other section of QR.

  1. In order to enhance testing of critical thinking skills, the detailed specifications of the Quantitative Reasoning Test (QRT) are being changed as follows:


    New: Data Analysis, Interpretation, and Sufficiency; and Quantitative Comparison (includes, but is not limited to, conversions; probability and statistics; geometry; and trigonometry)

So you may or may not have geometry or trig questions on the DAT, and they may or may not show up in your new quantitative comparison questions. I would strongly advise to err on the side of caution and learn geometry/trig in case you get any questions on it.

The math updates have been talked about for years... and now they're a year late. But hopefully that newsletter clears up the confusion about why trig/geometry are still on the DAT even if they are not listed in the scope of the test. I do think it is sneaky and it's possible they will be fully removed in the future, but for now everyone should still be reviewing these topics.

Greetings! I just took my DAT 2 days ago. I want to add that I did have Trig/Geo on mine, but it was maybe 1 or 2 questions (very basic stuff)? I think one was embedded in a Quantitative Comparison question (such as comparing two areas). However, every exam is different so you may or may not run into any trig/geo. I think it would be wise to at least know the basics for both topics!

@Ari Rezaei is completely right for the new QR section. It was supposed to be implemented in 2016 with more emphasis on statistics. When I took my DAT in 2016, it was in an experimental phase with a more evenly balanced number of questions for each section. As the year progressed, I have noticed that some of the pre-dental students whom I mentored said there were fewer trigonometry and geometry questions.

Hi all, I was scoping out this thread before I took the DAT. I just completed my exam and I did not have any trig/geometry questions. It was very heavy on the QC questions.

I just retook it last week and saw the difference between 2016 and 2017 version. They now have quantitative comparison, which I feel are just fancier types of word problems, yay! There was some trig and geometry... I think I had 2-3 problems.
