A owes B $4, B owes C $3, and C owes A $5. If C settles all the debts by giving money to both A and B, how much will C give A?

answer is $1

can someone please explain this in layman terms, thanks

The question implies that A and B will do nothing while C is the one that takes the initiative to settle all debts among the three. All in all, C will have to pay out $2, i.e. $1 to B and $1 to A.

think of this way:
A needs to pay $4, and receive $5, so in sum he will gain $1
B needs to pay $3, and receive $4, so in sum he will gain $1

so, C needs to pay them each $1

Since everyone is owed at least $3, we can just subtract $3 from each, giving:

A owes B $1
B owes C nothing
C owes A $2

Since C is supposed to settle all debts, C is simply just paying B the $1 that is owed from A and also fulfilling C's $1 debt to A.

Everyone is correct so far, so hopefully someone has explained it in a way that you understand.

I did it this way. To complete the thought:

C needs to pay $5, and receive $3, so in sum he will LOSE $2.

So he uses 1 of these dollars to give to A and the other 1 of these dollars to give to B.
