An airline passenger is planning a trip
that involves three connecting flights
that leave from Airports A,B, and C,
respectively. The first flight leaves
Airport A every hour, beginning at
8:00 a.m., and arrives at Airport B
2(1/2) hours later. The second flight
leaves Airport B every 20 minutes,
beginning at 8:00 a.m., and arrives at
Airport C
1/(1/6) hours later. The third
flight leaves Airport C every hour,
beginning at 8:45 a.m. What is the
least total amount of time the
passenger must spend between flights
if all flights keep to their schedules?
(A) 25 min
(B) 1 hr 5 min
(C) 1 hr 15 min
(D) 2 hr 20 min
(E) 3 hr 40 min

In Township K,
1/5 of the housing
units are equipped with cable
television. If
1/10 of the housing units,
including
1/3 of those that are
equipped with cable television, are
equipped with videocassette recorders,
what fraction of the housing units
have neither cable television nor
videocassette recorders?
(A)

answers: B A

First question:

assume you take the first flight which reaches airport B at 10;30am.

The scond flight leaves airport B every 20 min, or 3 times an hour. Therefore, the earliset flight you can catch will be at 10:40am. So you have to wait for 10 min. You would reach airport C 1 and 1/6 hours later, or 1 hr. and 10 min. So, you would reach airport C at 11:50.

The third flight leaves C every hour beginning at 8:45. The earliest you could catch would then be 12:45. That is a 55 min wait.

55min +10min = 1hr 5min.

are you sure you typed out the second question correctly? I don't understand the answer choices either. Are they fractions?

I think the OP wrote: denom over num

You have fractions 1/5, 1/3, and 1/10. The LCD is 30.

So 6/30 have cable and 3/30 have video. That's 9. But it says 1/3 of the cable users also have video. So 1/3 of 6 is 2. That means 2 of the cable users have video. So we have 4 cable users without video, 2 cable + video users, and 1 video user without cable. That's a total of 7.

The question asks how many of them don't have either. So 30 - 7 = 23.

Answer is 23/30 which is probably choice A.
