Hello everyone, I will get straight to the point. Is it a smart idea to take Quantitative Analytical Chemistry and Organic Chemistry I at the same time? I have been told that the lecture component of Quant. is just a continuation of General Chemistry and that the only major issue is the lab portion. Thanks for your help.

Chem major here. You'll be fine. Anal chem isn't bad I don't think. O Chem is not either but it's easy to get lost early on. This is many pre-meds' equivalent of taking physics with orgo.

Thank you guys. My schedule for the Fall will be Organic Chemistry I/Lab, Quantitative Analytical Chemistry, Biology III (focus on comparative anatomy and physiology), and Philosophy.

That's manageable. Analytical isn't too bad. Be disciplined and get ahead of the workload early and you'll be fine.

I think you'll be fine as well. Orgo required a lot of work outside of class but quant didn't. Just make sure you go in to quant lab with a plan every day so you're not wasting time reading the procedure. I absolutely dreaded the labs (40% of entire class grade was lab results!) and made it out fine.

I took analytic chem after orgo II at my undergrad, and I personally thought analytic chem was a pretty easy class (easiest out of my whole undergrad, 100 on all tests except final since I needed a 55). Thought it was chem II all over again, going more in depth on acids and bases and electrochemistry, but the math wasn't too hard. Only new stuff was some analytical stuff like chromatography, mass spec, nmr, etc at the end of the class, but not in much detail since the next step for chem majors was adv. analytic chem. Just practice the problems for both orgo and analytic and you'll be good.

This. I ended up with a B in lab because of accuracy. My lab was only 3 hours once a week and had 20 students sharing 6 old balance scales. Try to be the first to measure stuff like mass so you're not waiting around.

Analytical ain't bad, but Anal chem sounds just awful :mooning::nailbiting:
Kicking myself for not catching that the first time. Hindsight is 20/20 I guess 😀 hehe get it??... 😳

Yea I had a similar experience, limited lab equipment. If you do have to wait for instruments OP there's always something else you can be doing. Also, (even though you weren't looking for quant advice OP, I'll give you some cuz I hated lab) I found that slow and steady wins the race. Take your time, make sure you do things right the first time. You don't want to have to redo an entire day because you rushed through a procedure and got garbage data.
