Quarter vs Semester for Math

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Call the schools & ask. That's the only way to know for sure. Sometimes schools on a quarter system have a semester conversion scale, so check with your Registrar's Office as well.

Some schools require 1 semester of stats but I'm on the quarter system and have taken 1 quarter of stats. Will most schools accept that if I call them?
What I've found is that most schools wanted 3 semester credits of stats, and most quarter stats classes were 5 quarter credits, so it's equivalent.
You should definitely check just in case though.

Are schools lenient about the conversion of semester to quarter? I only have 4 quarter units so it's technically not enough. I don't really want to take another stats class because it's really pointless for just another 0.5 unit.

It probably will depend on each school. If it's a 4 credit biostats class they might make an exception but definitely contact each school separately to make sure. Applying is expensive, so you really don't want to waste about 100 or more dollars applying to a school that just won't be lenient about the half credit. There's plenty of schools that don't require stats or will be lenient.

Definitely depends. One school I interviewed at legit wants me to retake a course I already took just because they require 1 full semester. I sent them a syllabus to show that we covered everything a semester course covers, but they still say I need to take it.

They want me to pay $1,500 to take a class I already took just so I can relearn that material with 10x as much detail a couple months later in med school....?
Yeah it's dumb 🙁

Why can't medical schools say you need to take an x amount of courses? The quarter to semester conversion makes it harder for quarter system to apply imo.

The really nice trend that still ends up not meaning too much is the push from certain med schools to have only "recommended" classes. Because of the new MCAT, there are actually even more required classes then before unofficially, but it still helps to clear up situations like this. Do let us know about how that works out though. Maybe you could post as a reference for future students which schools are ok with quarters and which require semester based? Or you could just take a semester at your local community college and just settle it that way.
