For those currently attending SUNY, how do you like quarters as opposed to semesters? On my tour, I was told SUNY may be a little more difficult than some of the other schools, but it seems to me that would result in a better education. Any thoughts? I have been accepted to SCO, PCO, and SUNY, and believe I will be choosing SUNY....

Don't forget that SCO is on quarters for the time being (will switch to semester system in a year or so --- forget exactly when but someone on here will know).

SUNY was my first experience with the quarter system. It makes for a fast 10 weeks -- you really have to keep on top of the course material. Like anything else, though, you get used to it. 🙂

Right, I knew SCO would be switching, after what I believe will be my first year. I knew SUNY doesn't really have plans of changing the quarters system though, although they did say they would be changing their curriculum for the entering class of 2007 to make the load a little lighter. How did you do with your second year, winter semester? 9 classes, yikes!! Again though, I still think it will be SUNY for me. Thank you both for your replies!

SUNY may be changing away from the quarter system as part of the curriculum change, but it may be awhile before that happens. In the meantime, though, they try to make changes where they can to make things more efficient/bearable by incorporating input from the students and faculty for the next year's class -- since I've been here, there have been a couple changes to make things a little easier on us -- so they're trying to make things better.

Taking 9 classes is quite a thrill, I tell ya. 🙂 Somehow we all get through it, though!

Welcome to SUNY, HazelEyes! 😀

There's a summer program offered prior to 1st year for 18 students. Ask Dr. Johnston about it if you are interested.

You can get him through: [email protected] . The summer program consists of 2 classes, plus one lab, as I remember. The first quarter of first year is quite do-able without it, but it makes for a nice head-start.
