I watched residency match day celebration where they handed out envelopes and it seemed like people found out where they were going to. Someone told me that students actually got envelopes like 2 days before march 15th but they could not open them or something like that. Can someone clarify this? If I got an envelope 2 days beforehand, I would open it anyways. I would not be able to wait that long.

the medical students who do not match receive an email that states they have not matched. there information is sealed until on match day at either 12 or 1pm.

On the Monday before Match Day, people who participated in the Match find out if they have matched or not (by e-mail). If not, they usually enter the Scramble which starts at noon on Tuesday. If successful on Tuesday, the people who scrambled, know where they are going to be for their PGY-1.

For the people who did match on Monday, on Match Day, they find out either by e-mail or by envelope from Deans office, where they matched. The envelope given at those Match Day ceremonies contains the locations of where they matched. The Deans offices know where applicants match 30 minutes before the results are released to Match participants hence, the envelopes done by the Dean's office for the ceremony.

12 or 1pm East Coast time. If you're out West, and your new PD can't subtract correctly to account for the time difference, you may get an early morning call congratulating you on matching at _______ .
