I have been reading the admission requirements of some of the DO schools and most say that a grade of at least a "C" must have been achieved for each of the prerequisite courses. The Chicago school stipulates that a "C-" is not acceptable, but most do not make that distinction. So if they say nothing lower that a "C", does this encompass all plusses and minuses?
Also, if a school says no "C-"s, will my application still be processed with the conditions that if accepted I will rectify the "C-" prior to matriculation. Thanks guys.

Hullo MotherJones,

Your application will still be processed by AACOMAS and sent to the schools. You don't technically even have to have all of the prerequisites done until matriculation, but your application has to be strong enough to overcome any deficiencies to get you through the door - and what is strong enough or acceptable is entirely up to each school to which you apply. When you submit your application, you have to put down not only the classes you've taken, but what classes you intend to take before matriculation. It would be necessary to have this class on there to show the schools that do not accept a C- that you are going to retake it. This will also improve your GPA since only the latest grade will be used in the calculation (even though the old grade appears). Hope this helps and good luck!

I got into CCOM with a C- they just told me to retake it if I wanted to go there.

I, too, have a C-. I would say if you can retake it before you apply, it can only help your chances.

Before you even get to the point of applying, call the admission office of the school(s) you are interested in and ask. Don't rely on a few anecdotal evidence by relatively anonymous posters on an internet board to give you answers. Go straight to the source and ask - see what their official response is.

And policies may differ from school to school so asking different schools is always a good idea.

I think you definately have to retake it (unfortunately)

i got a c- for a pre-req and was not required to retake anything... granted these were allopathic schools...

Actually, this depends on your school's definition of a "C-."

The BOTTOM LINE is that you cannot have a grade below a 70. Just like high school, anything below 70 is failing. If your school defines "C-" as less than 70, then you will obviously need to retake the course.

It depends on the school. I had a C- in orgo2. NYCOM and CCOM told me to retake it (although NYCOM still offered me an interview). LECOM didn't care. Those are the only ones I remember. It was almost worth it to chose my school based on NOT retaking, thats how much I HATED orgo. (It all worked out in the end.)
