Good afternoon,

In the context of gaining experience that will contribute to the strength of a medical school application, does this program seem substantive for someone with zero prior healthcare/medical experience?

- "Non-clinical support" to patients' bedside
- Volunteers serve as "adjuncts to the clinical team"
- Round through three programs (surgical, oncology and medical units) in addition to ED
- Participate in the following programs:
*Surgery Waiting Rooms (greeting family, escorting them to and from Post-Anesthesia Care, providing update in the interim)
*Volunteer In Patient Services (patient rounding for satisfaction in medical and surgery units)
*Hospital Elders (cognitive orientation, mental stimulation, companionship)
*ED Comfort Care (basic comfort for hallway patients)
*ED Admission (ensuring positive patient experience)

There is a training component, a fairly significant long-term commitment and a mandate to train incoming volunteers.

As far as volunteer opportunities go, this program seems strong to me. Any thoughts or comments are highly appreciated as I embark on the very beginning of my pre-medical career.

All the best,

Gnossienne
