ACh is a neurotransmitter that carries "messages" between motor nerve cells and muscle cells. Acetylcholinesterase is an enzyme that destroys the excess ACh that is left in synapses after a "message" is transmitted. As far as I remember, acetylcholinesterase staining is used to identify peripheral (PNS) connections.
 
might be useful to see if it's being sequestered somewhere such that it cant catalyze ACh degradation but would still appear present according to quantitative measures.
