I am in the middle of my third year at a DO school and have a question about 'audition' rotations. All throughout med school everyone has told us to do audition rotations at our top choice of residency. Numerous examples are cited of how average people went and worked hard for a month and got the residency of their dreams. This just doesn't seem to be true in the MD world. For example, if a person goes to the University of Kentucky and applies to 15 programs that person is probably not going to do three audition rotations. I just wonder how necessary it is for a DO who has taken the USMLE step I & II with good scores and good grades and LORs to do an audition rotation in a moderately competitive field such as medicine, peds, or med/peds. I realize this is probably true for specialties such as derm or optho.
I was all set to do out rotations and still probably will do one such as a sub-internship, but as the time gets closer the cost and inconveinience are becoming more prohibitive. I would appreciate any advice anyone has on the subject. Thanks.
