Hi everyone, here is some background information of my story...

I am currently attending undergraduate school in NY. However, during freshman year, my family decided to move to North Carolina. Although we moved, I still attend school in NY and have been hoping to stay in this general area for dental school. Now I am considered a NC resident (got a drivers license and all) but I have been staying in NY because we still own a house in NY. My question is, now that I am thinking about dental school, will it be easy for me/should i declare myself a NY resident if I want to attend a public NY dental school? My biggest concern as of now is tuition so I would like to attend my state school.
However, now that I am a NC resident, I will consider staying a NC resident and applying to UNC. Has anyone else been in my situation before? What do you recommend me doing?
Also as a sidenote, if you had to choose between UNC or Buffalo or Stony, which would you choose and why?

Any feedback is appreciated. Thanks for your help guys!🙂

I would choose Buffalo because I believe it is the best program of those three. Nice thing is that you can get residency at Buffalo during your first year as long as you buy property in new york. If you don't want to do that, get a new york drivers license and start to reestablish new york residency...if you are sure you want to attend a SUNY school

thanks for your input. didnt know you can do that at buffalo!

From what I understand, you are a resident of whichever state your parents are in if they claim you as a dependent on their tax return. I would call the financial aid office at the school you want to attend to ask them for specifics- you'll probably want to get your parents not to claim you the year before you apply though. You probably also want to do things like register to vote in NY and get your license there- but again call the schools.

If you guys own a house in NY, and you pay taxes in NY, I think that might be good enough. I'd get that NY drivers license also, if you don't already have it.
As for schools, I would choose Stony (but I'm biased, beccause I go there). Buffalo is pretty good too. I don't know much about UNC.

Thanks guys.. does anyone else know more about this? Anyone siding with UNC on this one?

i'm going to try and make this is as small winded as possible. i am orig from NC. i was offered a scholarship to a school in GA, but it would not cover the out of state situation. my dad lived in GA, so all i did was fill out a out-of-state tuition waiver. i was approved for in-state tuition.

with your parents owning property in both states, that situation rocks for you. you can basicly pick the state you want to "live" in. all you need is a driver's license for a state to be considered a resident as long as you can prove that you live there. a house deed with your folks name on it, and their tax information with you on it should sufice.

as for the biased opinion on which school to choose, being from NC i would lean towards UNC. chapel hill is an amazing town and the people are incredably nice. there is always something to do, and the basketball there is insaine! i have some friends in the medical school there and they absolutely love it. they say the docs are super nice, and everyone in the dept is very helpful. i can only assume that the dental program is very similar.

if you have any other discrete questions on state residency, please PM me. i know ways to get around some of those stupid laws...i've done it...and it's legal 🙂

Where are you getting this info from the residency guide on the UB website doesn't mention anything about it, they say you needed to live there 12 months prior.

From classmates, there are ways around the 12 month thing...I am instate so I didn't have to do it. Search around on these forums long enough and you will find someone who did...

Regmata's right. If you buy (not rent) property in NY, then you're automatically a resident.

I remember I read somewhere in the NY state government website, saying that as long as you have been living in NY for a year, have a valid NY address with utility bills proving so, and a NY driver's license, you are counted as a NY resident...
So now i'm all very confused, too. I've been living in NY for the past 8 years, living in a place of our own, and have NY driver's license, pay taxes here... but i'm an international student without greencard! so now i don't know if i qualify for the in-state tuition at buffalo! i e-mailed the financial aid people at Buffalo but they haven't gotten back to me yet... anybody has any idea how this foreign student situation works? Thanks guys i really appreciate it!

I dont know if international students qualify for in-state status. Call Buffalo's financial aid office. I'm sure they deal with this sort of thing on a regular basis and can give you a definite answer.

Anyone care to point me in the right direction? I searched buffalo property and couldn't seem to find any hits. This is all I found online

from my understanding of that buying property is one thing on the checklist but you still need the others - NY State tax, NY DL, etc
