What exactly are these things? As a dental student on a 4-year HPSP scholarship, will I be required to do training during the school years? How do people do that?

Did you already sign your contract? Dental students on HPSP have the option to go to BOLC during the school year if you have a summer off, otherwise they usually go after graduation and before the 1st duty station. It's also an option to go before starting dental school.

As for ADT, others can elaborate on how you can apply for it. It does not take you out of school if you have scheduled classes.

ADT is a wonderful time where you get a larger stipend payment (100% of O1 pay v 75%). You just go to school like you normally do. That is all.

A100% o1 pay minus FICA taxes--which comes down to about 85-90%. Regular stipends are not subject to FICA taxes. You get paid a bit more if you have dependents.

BOLC = Basic Officer Leadership Course = the entry level military training that all officers must do. It can be done before, during, or after dental school.

ADT = Active Duty for Training - while in the Reserves it is a time you are brought on active duty orders. While in HPSP it is the time you get paid active duty pay. This can be paid while still at school or while doing an externship at a military base. It is coordinated with Ms. Roxanne Flores.

You do the ADT during the summer in between school breaks. You check out bases or programs you may be interested in applying for after graduation. If you don't have breaks you get paid for that time while at school.

can anyone talk about how OBLC is, and what to expect?

Yeah, I heard from a marine that the OBLC is always harder than basic because you are now in a leadership position. He said direct commissioned officers and non-direct commissioned officers are together and you learn to assemble and clean weapons, go on FTX and do all the crawling in the dirt and going through all the stuff you normally do in basic training. Is this similar to the Army?

Not even close. I did both Army basic training as a private and then again as an officer and there is no comparison.

Medical BOLC is designed so that people who will be medical professonals can all succeed. It is designed for awareness and orientation, and not to create experts in the military arts.

Does it make it a difference if you complete OBLC before, during, or after school?

There are some benefits to completing it before school because many dental schools don't give you the time off to do it during.

If you get it done before you graduate it may be shorter than if you wait until you graduate. Also it may give you the chance to begin specialty training earlier.

Look through the threads, a lot more has been discussed on the topic.

I would definitely do it before or during school!

You do not qualify for the new bonuses (Consolidated Special Pay or CSP) until completion of BOLC. Therefore, if you get it done before graduation, you have a chance of getting your extra pay earlier.

I say a chance, because you also have to posses a valid license.
