question about Charles-Drew

I would also like to know the answer to this too. I applied in late september.

yes me too...

I applied late sept as well.

I just got my secondaries from them yesterday. I'm guessing no; the deadline is Jan31st.

I have been told that they tend to give a lot of secondaries in december and january.

I submitted my primary in mid-august ..meaning it probably wasn't cleared until sometime in Sept and I still havent received a secondary either... they said that they will be handing them out until mid-jan though. It seems like most people haven't received one yet.

I interviewed mid-November and we were the first group. They said they still have a long way to go in terms of interviews and secondaries.

How is their program now that King is closed? I heard Harbor took over. I have been out of Cali for 5 years now for undergrad and grad school.
Someone please update me.

Since King closed, they do their rotations almost entirely at UCLA affiliated hospitals. The people I know in the program have been doing their rotations at places like olive view, ucla (chs), etc. Other than not having their own teaching hospital, everything else is the same, but they are apparently looking for a new teaching hospital.

WednesdaysArmy- if you don't mind me asking, when did you get your primary application in? I'm tryin to figure out if they are doing it in the order that they received applications because that's how they did it last year, I think.

I can help. My primary was verified mid-August. Received the Drew secondary late August. Submitted the secondary the last week of September and received an interview invitation mid-October. I interview there this week.

They absolutely don't do it based on when you sent in your primary, that's for sure. My primary was sent in the first 2 weeks of June, and I haven't received a secondary.

Sure, I don't mind. My primary was submitted in early August, secondary in early October, received an interview mid-October and interviewed Mid-Nov. I am waiting to hear in mid-Jan. It was a very relaxed interview, one faculty and a group interview.

Anybody else hear anything from them yet? (about a secondary) ...i'm tryin to decide if I should contact them and ask them what's up or if people are starting receive the secondaries then i'll just wait it out a couple more days

Back in October I called them about the secondary, and 20 minutes later it was in my inbox. 2 of my friends had the same experience. They called, then got it. Good luck, 👍

For all of you who have applied to charles drew.

what are the differences between charles drew and the geffen ucla?

I just know there has been recent controversy with the king/drew hospital...

did you guys receive confirmation of the receipt of your AMCAS from drew/ucla? I just realized I don't think I ever got one..

you can probably find a lot of info if you do a basic search...but to give you a quick run-down...ucla currently has 3 different programs: ucla main, drew/ucla, and ucla/riverside. drew/ucla has an emphasis of attracting applicants who have experience with underserved communities and whose goal is to serve them. the first 2 years are exactly the same as ucla, except for our preceptorship which is done in a primary clinic in central LA which serves mostly black and latino patients who are uninsured/underinsured. after the closing of king/drew, we now do our rotations at the same ucla affiliated sites (cedars, chs, oliveview, harbor, va, etc). the drew program is accredited through ucla, so there is no risk of us losing our rotations since ucla has always had reserved spots for us in case king closed. the situation with king is very complicated and not likely to be resolved soon, so until further notice, our rotations will be at ucla sites. we are not looking for one new teaching hospital, but there are hospitals in the area of south central la that may be added as rotation sites. this is not likely to happen soon since getting acgme approval for academic teaching is a very long process.

during 3rd and 4th year we also dont have doctoring anymore (phew) and instead work on our research thesis (focusing on health disparities) and have clinic time with our own patients that come to see us.

as far as the application process, we dont give out secondaries in order of when you submitted your primary. applications are always under review and since we dont give out many secondaries, only applicants who are very strong get secondaries right away. secondaries are constantly evaluated and again, the strongest applicants get invited for interviews. since the drew process is very meticulous about picking the 24 students, unfortunately the process takes longer than at other programs. but its definitely worth the wait
🙂

LadyDoc2-- did you talk to Sandy or Teresa because I emailed & called them the first couple days of November and didn't get that result. I'm positive it's not even a question of whether or not I qualify for their secondary because I am a reapplicant who was wait-listed last year so I know I at least deserve a secondary. Thanks for your help!

Hi UCLAalum,
I have only corresponded with Sandy, a few times this cycle. She is really responsive, and gets back to my calls and emails within 24 hours.

Does anyone know if they give interview invites via letter or email? A friend was told she would be getting a letter in the mail--just wondering if these are possibly interviews or always rejections?

Thanks and gluck!:luck:

I called and they said it was received. IMO, you have to show interest and then they are responsive.

Thanks for the info! it really cleared some things up for me! Do you know anything about the ucla/riverside?

i believe the ucla/riverside is a program with spots reserved for students in a special program at uc riverside undergrad--that kind of feeds into this program--but i hear it is incredibly competitive! i mistakenly applied for this program on the AMCAS-as a non UC riverside undergrad applicant and not surprisingly was immediately rejected/unqualified --however if you are accepted into the UCLA-Prime program there is the opportunity to join this program- i believe some training occurs at riverside (i almost want to say the first two years)---anyone else who may be better informed can please correct me =D

Both the University and associated public hospital fell into serious trouble at the outset of the 21st century.[2] By 2006, several residency programs had to be terminated because they lost accreditation for not meeting the necessary amount of oversight, and the hospital itself was forced into a radical restructuring plan in late-2006.[1] The restructuring caused hospital to sever it ties to the neighboring medical school and terminate support to 248 medical residents.[3] In October 2006, the national Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education informed school officials that it planned to revoke the university's accreditation because of the hospital's upcoming loss of Medicare money; as a result the university voluntarily withdrew its accreditation.[1] The school can seek reinstatement to relaunch its residency program in July 2008, but given the restructuring of its former teaching hospital may not be able to meet that deadline. As a response to the problems, the university reorganized and got rid of its president and dismissed nearly two-thirds of its board of trustees.[1]

On March 6, 2007, officials from the university announced that they will sue Los Angeles County for $125 million for breach of contract, claiming that the restructuring of the hospital gutted the adjacent university.[3] In response, Los Angeles County Board of Supervisor Mike Antonovich stated "Drew University will fail in court as they failed as a medical school."[3]

In June 2007, the school began an 18-month rebranding effort aimed at preventing people from associating the school for the continuing ordeals of King-Harbor; the school criticized the hospital for leaving an old sign bearing the King/Drew name.[1]

In July 2007, the university passed a curriculum review by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges and retaining its accreditation, announcing plans for a new four-year medical school and nursing school in partnership with the University of California.[4]

In an escalation of the rift between the county and the university, the county is now attempting to evict the university's research departement out of the Augustus F. Hawkins Mental Health Center building.[5] The university had a greater increase in publications this year than any other American research institution in a time where American publications are on the decline.
