I have a couple of questions if a resident or other applicants can clear some confusion for me.

1. Can we apply to pediatrics and medicine prelim spots for our clinical base year?

2. I have gotten interviews for anesthesia and categorial medicine but have not heard anything from the preliminary spots. When do prelim interviews go out? Do most anesthesia programs help you find a CBY spot?

3. When we put our rank list, after I list my anesthesia spots, do I then put my preliminary places? I am really confused about this part and if someone knows more about this, please let me know!

Thanks

Yes, you can apply to preliminary medicine and pediatric programs. Many anesthesia programs are now 4 years so you do not need to find your own first year. Otherwise, it is your own responsibility to find a first year spot. I applied to prelim medicine and transitional years. The interviews have been slowing coming in but not nearly as quickly as the anesthesia interviews. I am hoping that after Nov. 1st there will be a burst of interviews.

When you make your match list you make a supplemental list for all the 3 year anesthesia programs you applied to. This supplemental list includes prelim and TY programs and can be changed for each program. (ex. if i rank UAB then I may want my 1st year to be in Alabama, but for a program in Chicago I would want my first year to be in Illinois.)

Why are you applying to categorical medicine positions? Still deciding between specialties?

Hey,

Thanks for that info. I didn't know there was a supplemental list for prelim spots for match.

I am applying to categorical medicine just to keep my options open. It was tough choosing between medicine and anesthesia so I figured I have a few bucks to spare and apply to both. All my medicine interviews are for categorical even though I applied to both categorical and prelim so I am in a bind as to how to tell them I only want prelim.

Thanks again for your info. It was very helpful.

How do you have extra money???! Sorry, none of my business....

A few IM docs were urging me to apply to IM programs too b/c they thought I'd be good at IM (I would, but I wouldn't be very happy) and that with anesthesia being competitive it's good to have a backup. I didn't listen to their advice though and I'm glad because it turns out I'm plenty competitive in the field I love.

Are you leaning toward one or the other yet?

I too applied to anesthesia, IM prelim and IM categorical as my back up. I was told by my #1 IM categorical (who I did not tell about anesthesia therefore did not apply as prelim) that the spot would be mine if I wanted. This puts me in a bind now and I have no idea what to do...Does it reflect poorly if I ask to be ranked prelim instead of categorical after interviewing categorical. Or should I rank it after all my anesthesia programs as categorical???????SOMEBODY PLEASE ADVISE!😕😕😕😕😕😕

I made some shrewd business arrangements before medical school so finances are not an issue. I've interviewed at a bunch of anesthesia places but the place I loved the most is an IM program. So this is going to be a hard decision when it comes time for my ROL.

Rank your Categorical anesthesia programs first unless you have a overwhelming desire to short change yourself in the match for a prelim medicine spot....not a good idea in my book.

It sounds like you are going to match into this prelim medicine spot no matter what...so throw it at the bottom of the ROL.

Example

1.Categorical Anesthesia at Baskin Robins
2.advanced Anesthesia at BaSKIN Robins
3.Categorical Anesthesia at Denny's University
4.Advanced Anesthesia at Denny's University
5.Stinky IM Prelim spot.
