Hi, I started shadowing and i had few questions regarding the composite filling and crown. When we do composite filling we start by removing the cavity or decay. Then we put etch(blue gel). Can anyone explain to me what etch does? Does it clean the decay? After putting the etch, we use primer and bond. Can you also explain what primer and bond do? Also when do people get crown?

Acid etching increases surface area for bonding
Primer enhances the bond to dentin (doesn't reduce bond to enamel)
Adehsive provides chemical bond to primer and resin composite material, mechanically bonds to etched enamel

This system (Scotchbond Mutlipurpose) helps the composite stick to the tooth so the restoration doesn't just fall out... there is a similar product that is used large amalgam restorations called amalgabond

Hi happyending2011

You asked a great question!

Next time ask the dentist you are shadowing. That is one of the reasons shadowing is a good idea. You can learn a ton that way. I am very sure the dentist is happy to answer your questions.

I know I would rather have a bright prospective dental student asking questions then a mute taking up space in my treatment room.

Crowns, in simple terms, are used when there is a lack of remaining tooth structure left, mostly due to either decay or fracture, to support the placement of a composite or amalgam restoration after the tooth has been prepared. In essence, the amount of tooth that is decaying or fell off leaves too little left.
