hello~
i am an undergraduate student at ucsd and i would like to consider becoming a dentist.

however, i have no idea what major/minor would be best!
i have researched this online, and learnt that"there is no required or preferred undergraduate major for pre-dental students."
still...from your experiences, which major/minor do you believe may be the most beneficial/helpful,etc.??

any and all responses will be greatly appreciated!!
thank you in advance for all your help!

you are correct...it doesn't matter what your major is....the only thing to consider is that you want to have a strong scientific background so you get exposure to those topics....you are going to need to be strong with scientific foundations for your DAT and dental school........BIO, BIOCHEM, CHEM, MICROBIO are good places to consider. You also need strong extracurricular activities and a diverse complement of coursework which shows interest in the learning process (not simply that you can learn science)

major does not really matter. just make sure that you have the correct pre-reqs done. some schools are a little weird about what they want and as a UC student on the quarter system, kinda got screwed a little. So be really careful on how many units they want in each section. Also make sure ur DAT scores are high and that you have experience in an office

The best major is one that you feel you'd like, you'd do well in and could use for a back-up plan should you not get into dental school (or another professional school should you decide not to apply to dental school). A lot of people decide on majors just because they feel it is what is best to get into a school, but should they not get into school they could be screwed. I know - that is what I risked. The only good my degree would have been for is teaching high school science classes (after taking the required education courses) and there is NO WAY I would have done that. That is why I had to rock my grades and test scores to ensure I would get what I wanted.

If being an english major is what fits your fancy, then that is what you should do. If underwater basket weaving is what does it for you, then go for it. But, make sure you could make a living from it in the end if you decide to go that route and don't get into school.
