For EC's so far, I currently have ~450 hours volunteering in my local hospitals ED (which I currently do four 8 hoursa week) and ~900 hours volunteering at a Nursing and Rehabilitation Home (however it's all from HS so I don't even know if I can count that when I apply) and I'm in my school's Chemistry Club. That's it.

I know I need a bit more. As for shadowing, I cold called about 50 places and just got a bunch of no's or "sorry we don't do that here". My regular physcian said I could shadow her for a day but that's only 8 hours... don't most schools want like many hours at one place? I tried asking doctors who work in the ED where I volunteer but most of them wouldn't even answer me..... they have very little time/patience there for volunteers. I kind of feel like I hit a brick wall on the whole shadowing thing....

So what more should I do at this point? I recently contacted Hospice and they said they have a training coming up in January if I'm interested in that. I also contacted The Red Cross however the only volunteer position they have available at the moment is a crisis on-call person which means that for a week every three weeks I'd be responding to crises in the area.... I don't know how that helps me for Med School and I can't really leave class or work to go and help with some crises I'm underqualified to help with anyway.

Any suggestions about other places I should contact/what other EC's I should be considering getting involved with to better myself for Med School?

Are there any scribe programs in your area? This is a great way to get in-depth medical experience as well as a meaningful clinical job.

I don't know of any.... I googled it and came up with one medscribe service that was not particular to my area... just my state in general. I sent in an application so we'll see. Thanks for the advice.

Do you have any med schools in the area? Maybe they might be more wiling to help. Or maybe free/low cost community clinics?

Good idea... I contacted a local free clinic so fingers crossed.

Also, I have a question about my ED vounteering. I don't get to be in the room when the doctors in there or even when the nurse is in there and I don't get to know what is wrong with the patient, all that I do is bring the family members drinks and bring the patients blankets. Is this what volunteering in the Emergency Department is supposed to be like? Whenever I'm amazingly bored, I just tell myself that I have to start at the bottom to get up to the top. I pretty much get **** on by everyone but I know the hours look good so I keep going back. I never even thought to ask if this is what should be expected from ED volunteering.
