hello everyone i was just wondering if there is anyone on this board that went through the military to become a pharmacist or help pay for the cost of pharmacy school. if so could you please share you experiences and whether you would recommend going through military or just doing it on your own.

There is no 4 year HPSP (health professions scholarship) for pharmacy students like there is for med/dental students. There are a few ways you can go about using the military to pay for school.

  1. ROTC - It's an additional credit or two per semester. (Military Science class) They pay 100% tuition. Contact your school, or future schools, ROTC office for details.
  2. HPSP in the Air Force will pay 100% tuition for the final two years of pharmacy school, plus a ~1900/month stipend.
  3. Something similar is in place for the Navy.
  4. SLRP - Student Loan Repayment Program - repays 120k of student loan debt in exchange for service in the Army. Contact AMEDD recruiter.

67echo is an Army pharmacist and used the SLRP. I'm sure he'll make a comment on this topic when he's got some time. I've not gone through this program yet but my plan is to use ROTC if I have to attend an out-of-state college for pharmacy school. I've already got a bit of time under my belt so this route makes sense. However, I would advise against using the military simply just to pay for school. Lots of people do it but actually wanting to serve your country is a huge benefit when entering the military. Your mandatory service will go much faster if you believe in your mission and what you are doing. The military is a bad place to be just for a paycheck, which is much lower than civilian pay.
