question about grades

This is somewhat of a strange question but, does anyone know what to do if the professor made a mistake and gave you an incorrect final grade? I just got my grades today for the fall term semester and I received a B+ in physics lab. However, I think there is a mistake with the scoring. My scores are as follows:

Informal lab reports worth 60% 966/1000
Formal lab reports worth 20% 183/200
quizes worth 20% 98/100

In our university an A is >92.4%, A- is 90.0% - 92.4%, and a B+ is 87.6% - 89.9%. Since the grades are already in I don't know what to do. If this is a mistake is there a way that they can change my grade even though the final grades are in?

go talk to your prof. take all your graded papers. they will be able to change it. it shouldn't be a big deal.

If its a mistake on their part then they should change it. Talk to him about what happened and take all your graded materials aswell.

Yup, take all your graded papers and this sheet where you calculated your grade. But don't start off saying, "I think you screwed up my grade ". Maybe ask him how he calculated it (maybe he added an attendance grade or something) and what he calculated your total to be. And then show him what you calculated.

you can actually use excel sheet and show it to him that way. So there is no mistake in the calculations.

There's definitely an error there. You received a 95.86% and that's obviously well beyond a B+. There really shouldn't be any reason why your professor can't change the grade. I'm sure it's just an honest mistake. Your prof will probably feel so badly about it that he'll try to fix it ASAP. Awesome grade by the way! 😀

Does anyone else have the authority to change grades (for example, academic dean) after all the final grades are in and a grade report is sent in the mail? Because I talked to someone who received a 79.77% as their final grade and technically that's a C+ (0.23% away from a B-), they talked to the professor but the professor didn't want to bump her up to a B-. However, that girl actually knows someone who received 86.4% and was given a B+ which is a % between 87.5 - 87.9. It's kind of unfair to raise the score of some other students who are 0.23% away from the next letter grade.

Anyways, getting back to the original question. Does anyone else other than the professor of the coure has the authority to change grades?

However, this has the dual disadvantage of upsetting the professor because you circumvented him, and annoying the chairman because he has so many other things to worry about other than changing your grade, and he will want to know why you didn't want to go to the professor himself.

Which is what I'm going to ask you now. Why won't you go to the prof?

I will go to the professor, I'm only asking who has authority over the professor incase he doesn't want to change my grade. There are some professors in my school that don't really care about the students at all, even if they did make a mistake they won't do anything about it.

at my school, only the teacher of the course can change the grade -- NO one else, not even if they are above them. sucks cuz a stupid, grad student screwed me over. oh well, bad karma caught up to her and now she's having a lot of problems and forced to be on a leave of absence.

I will go to the professor, I'm only asking who has authority over the professor incase he doesn't want to change my grade. There are some professors in my school that don't really care about the students at all, even if they did make a mistake they won't do anything about it.

You usually have to talk to the Professor first- it's easier to make changes if the Prof. realizes they made a mistake- if you made an effort to be in class and do the work, the Prof. probably appreciates that enough to fix your grade. If you pissed them off in anyway- like by never attending class- you may not be able to change your grade, because they will argue that your grade reflects that. If you did everything right and deserved a good grade and he/she still wont change it, go to the department head. If that doesn't work, goto one of the deans.

If it was a mistake, it should be an easy fix. But if there are other issues and the Prof. had a reason to lower the grade, it will be much more difficult to fix.
