Hey everyone

A friend of mine is finishing up his last year of medical school in Peru and is interested in applying for residency positions in the United States, specifically UMiami/ Jackson Memorial Hospital. Does anyone know what are the requirements for IMGs to apply? Does he need to take the USMLE or is the graduate test he takes in Peru sufficient? Also, is it too late to apply now?

Thanks

Your friend needs to apply to ECFMG to get his credentials checked out, take USMLE Step 1, Step 2 CK + CS... and only with Step 1 scores and ECFMG can he get interviews... with step 2's, his chances are higher of getting interviews, but before he joins the residency, he has to finish 1+2, and if he wants a visa (which the hospital may or may not sponsor), he has to have step 3. All 4 parts cannot be taken within a 12 month span, so budget some time. He can apply to match for July 2008 at the earliest. Obviously he also needs a Dean's letter (MSPE) and letters of rec as well, and some audition rotations here couldn't hurt. Go to the ECFMG website and get the ball rolling from there. Once he gets status approved, he can enroll for the steps... and also keep in mind that he has to take Step 2 CS in one of 5 cities with a special testing center in America. Everything else, he should be able to take at a Thomson Learning center in Peru.

My cousin just got done with this process... she's from England, but a dual US citizen... it was brutal, and quite expensive, but worth it.
