Hey, any help would be appreciated.

I am applying to DO and MD EM programs this round. I also applied to a couple DO rotating internships in favorable geographic locations in case I don't match.

Now, I am not planning on ranking these DO internships because that would take me out of the MD EM match if I don't match in the DO match.

How then, would interviewing at the DO internship programs help me? Will they somehow hold a spot for me post match? Will they remember me if later if I have to go through the scramble (the MD, not DO scramble?)

I have two interviews, and not sure whether it is worth going or what questions I should ask concerning this situation, thanks.

Will they somehow hold a spot for me post match?

No, they cannot do this. If you do not rank them, they will simply try to match the next person on their list.

Will they remember me if later if I have to go through the scramble (the MD, not DO scramble?)

If you fail to match in the DO EM match, and then fail to match in the MD EM match, you'll then have to try to scramble into something left over MD or DO. Whether programs will see your prior interview as a positive (We know this guy already) or a negative (He obviously didn't rank us, so we are a last option) is unclear. Since it's only a 1 year commitment, I expect the former -- they know and expect you'll be trying for a new program for the following year.

thanks for posting. Are there any statistics available for last year or the one before concerning if they had any spots left over after the match and scramble.

Are the chances of there being spots left after the DO match and the DO scramble so low that I should cancel the interview?

If I don't cancel and attend, I am not sure what I should tell them concerning my situation when they ask what field I want to match in, etc.

thanks

I graduated from a DO school in May, 2009 but didn't match. There were traditional osteopathic internship programs left over after the allopathic match (but I'm limited to a specific area- Michigan, and there weren't any in my area). I don't know if it will be the same this year, with the increasing number of grads from new schools or existing schools with increased enrollment.
This year, I applied to a few DO internship programs and I just told them that I realized that I'd be pulled from the MD match if I matched at their program, but that my biggest priority this year was to match into something that would allow me to continue along my desired career path (ie not primary care).
