I took a LOA during my third year of medical school and have matched for residency. I am now applying for my license.

If my school states on my transcripts that I was on a health or administrative LOA, is it sufficient explanation if I say that I was thinking of dropping out of school (this is the truth). I saw a mental health professional and she has signed off saying that I have no limitations, am able to perform without any problems and do not need ongoing care.

Will the licensing board want more information or is this type of statement sufficient?

I think it's fine to say that. They probably mostly want to know if it was for substance abuse, severe mental illness, etc. Your problem was less serious so likely no downside to coming clean on your licensing application about what the exact reason was.

Great, thanks.

On the flip side, then, if my med school mentions leave for health reasons/administrative leave, will the board typically request expanded information from my medical school, or myself?

Anyone knowledge out there regarding this?

They may (it will be state specific) and you will need to be honest about it. Lying on a state license application (either by omission or actively) is a fantastic way to lose your ability to practice medicine in the US...forever.

If a health issue was the problem, is it necessary to disclose the nature of the issue?

Moreover, if it was a bunch of things that contributed to my LOA, how do program directors view that/ ask during your interview.

ANyone with such an experience please post I would sooo appreciate your impressions

I have a friend who took time off because of depression. I didn't really ask her whether anyone asked on interviews about it but I don't know if it mattered because she ended up at her #1 choice (granted she filtered a lot of highly competitive places but it was still a very strong middle/upper tier program). Her deans letter actually quickly explained why she took time but I don't know if she addressed in a personal statement (which some may recommend)
