I'm hoping to get a letter of recommendation from my current boss. I'll not be working with him for much longer, so I'd like to ask for the letter before I move on. However, I won't actually be applying to medical schools until about a year from now. Essentially, my question is, does it matter when the letter of recommendation was written (within reason?). So, would it be OK to ask him to write the letter now, even though it wouldn't be submitted for about a year? Or better to wait and ask him closer to when I apply?

Bring up the letter. Just so he can have it in his mind. Then you ask him closer to the date.
