Hi, I am new here and I am definitely considering going into school for pharmacy. However, I am torn between doing that or majoring in Biochemistry. My question is, is it unheard of or a waste of money to get a degree and then go to school or Pharmacy. I understand that it would be 8 years instead of 6 but figured it would give me more flexibility. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

It is from my understanding that most pharmacy schools are accepting those with a bachelor's degree nowadays. About majoring in biochemistry, if you're just majoring in that field just for pharmacy then you need to consider what you're getting yourself into. Choose a major that suits you, and one that you will enjoy!

Whether or not a bachelor's is an advantage depends on the school. Some have no preference while others seem to give stong preference. Typically they may SAY that they have a preference but when it comes down to it the percent of people with bachelors is about the same in the applicant pool and acceptance pool at most institutions. So, they often "prefer" a bachelors, but don't give enough of a rip to give it any real weight in the admissions process.

I think it's smart to get a bachelor's first. 70% of my class has a bachelor's degree. It's definitely becoming a trend for schools to give preference to those with a bachelor's degree. If you happen to not get accepted to pharmacy school, a bachelor's degree can give you more options.
