I just have a quick question. I'm planning to apply for EM in the 2012 osteopathic match, but I'm also, at this point, playing with the idea of applying to radiology. As I'm setting up my fourth year rotations, I wonder if it would look bad to the EM folks if I do two radiology rotations next summer(do programs look at this sort of thing)? I'm planning on doing two EM rotations. I'm just not 100% sure yet, but I don't want to do anything to sabotage my application at this early stage. I've kind of been agonizing over this for a while, so if anyone has any words of wisdom, I would appreciate it.

Thanks!

You should know that some osteopathic EM programs require you to do a rotation or at least shadow in their ED in order to receive an interview.

Thanks for the advise guys. I can only do two EM electives so I'm trying to figure out what my top choices would be and get those rotations set up.

I'm an osteopathic student applying to ER and I applied to a couple of peds programs as well but mostly ER. At my school we get 4 electives and I did 1 radiology, 2 ER and 1 Toxicology rotation. Do what you want to do. The one thing to consider is you will need a SLOR (Standard LOR) if you are applying to ER so try to do some ER electives so you can get additional letters when you apply. Other than that I think its good to do other electives to expand your education and training rather than doing ALL ER electives.

The SLOR is only for allopathic applications. Osteopathic you just do regular LORs.

I used 3 SLORs as my letters for my DO applications and still got plenty of interviews.

I also rotated at 2 dual programs and an MD program, so not sure which DO programs required a rotation or shadowing to get an invite. I did have 1 program that seemed to really prefer a 2nd look if you hadn't rotated in order to help your chances of being ranked highly (or at all??). But that was 1 program out of 13.

Two very different fields. Do what you want. But make sure you get your audition EM and Radiology months in. And like others said, get those LORs done. Good Luck!

Sorry, you're right. You won't need slor if you are applying for osteopathic only! I applied for both osteopathic and allopathic programs. I actually used one of my slors for the osteopathic programs too. When you apply for osteopathic only you will just need a regular EM LOR. So you will be fine!! Good luck next year 👍
