Dear all with answers

I have had an interview at MCV here in Virginia. I am on a waitlist at another school but my dream school is MCV...just because it has everything I love about a medical school...or will love I think. My mcat is a bit low...like say 9 on each section. Can I realistically expect to maybe get in this year...like say off of the wait list...or should I just accept the fact that I need to take the mcat again and work towards that goal? My gpa is 3.5 chem. Thanks 🙂

In general, if a school offers you an interview, it means they feel you are academically talented enough that you could handle their curriculum. The interview is there to assess your interpersonal skills and get to know you on a more personal level. You should feel proud to have gotten the interview and know that they would not have granted it to you if they didn't think you could handle the academics. I've heard that for the selection process at most schools post-interview, a person's grades, MCAT, and other academic qualities are still given a little weight, but much less weight than they were pre-interview. Congratulations, MCV is an amazing school!

Yeah...I have a really good chance of getting in at another school...I interviewed at...however my heart is really set on MCV. I can't decide what to do. I have so many options if I get into that school and not MCV...I really want to go there. I guess if I retake the old mcat again...it can't hurt anything as long as I do better...and of course then if I get waitlisted can move my position on the wait list up after that. Good idea??? Thanks

I agree with everyone...if they gave you an interview you got what it takes to get in. As for your MCAT idea, just remember that you may go down. That probability does exist. Hang in there and good luck.

I think MCV uses the "score" they give you throughout the process, nothing you do can change it. I remember them telling us not to send supplementary materials because your score stays the same and does not get changed, so there is no point to updating your file. So I don't think it would help you (this year) if you retook the MCAT.

Actually there are only two things you would send to MCV as updates to your file: Any new grades and any updated MCAT. This is straight from Dr. Heldberg's mouth.

While it is true they will not change your total "score/rating" they look at your stats as ways to up you on the list. The first number is your score averaged from the individual committee members (this number can never change once it is given, and it is the first number you are rated by), next is your score from your interviewer, the next number is your gpa and the final is your MCAT. These scores are looked at in order to determine who is taken off the list and who is not.
And I agree, I don't think retaking the MCAT will help you this year. Plus you may go down. ~9's on the three sections is really about average anyway, isn't it?

Hope this helps.

Thanks All

i have however decided to retake the mcat. If I get waitlisted this year...obviously I can help myself out and maybe avoid reapplying next year. Also, I feel that I can improve...in fact I know I can...I didn't get in much study last time...this time that will change. I also know that I am doing better on my practice tests which logically should mean a higher overall score on the real deal. If I don't feel ready to take it I won't take it of course. Also I will save myself some time in the long run if I take it now...sinceI won't need to wait another year. Thanks all.
