Question About Meaning of "Board Eligible"

Hi,

Is a person board eligible indefinitely as long as they finished a residency program? Or does a person need to take/pass the boards within a certain amount of time to still be considered board eligible? As a resident, I've been checking job descriptions and they just about all require a board eligible or board certified physician? Thanks for the clarification.
