Would being diagnosed with clinical depression hinder any career opportunities down the line?
Ie the state not allowing a doctor with a history of mental illness (depression) practice, etc.

Thanks in advance.

Depression and anxiety are widespread amongst the common population. I doubt it's a problem.

It won't hinder you as long as it's well controlled via therapy and/or medicine

I've heard otherwise (albeit SDN) and I can see the news headlines now, lol...

Is there any oversight of this by licensing boards, the state, med schools, etc?

edit: this = medical history/status of Dr's or med. students

I think when you apply for and renew your license you're supposed to report whether you have any conditions that might harm a patient or otherwise limit your ability to safely practice.

That's why I asked about oversight. I'm asking in case I'm put in a situation where I have to disclose it possibly

From what I have heard you don't have to disclose medical history. Could be wrong but I really think not.

I don't see how depression comes into play.

Different states have different questions for applying for your medical license. As far as I know, most or all of them ask in some way about any condition/illness that would impair your ability to practice medicine. Some are more specific than others - i.e. some will ask if you "currently" have a physical/mental condition and some will ask about past physical/mental conditions. To quote the question from one state's application: "Do you have any physical or mental condition that currently impairs your ability to practice medicine or that would cause reasonable questions to be raised about your physical, mental, or professional competency?"

If you've been well controlled and have not been impaired from school/work, then you could say "no," but if something happens down the line and you are found to have lied on your licensing app, you may face trouble.

Having depression won't stop you from being a doctor or getting licensed if you are not impaired.

A well-controlled medical condition that does not impair performance with reasonable accomodation is not a problem.
It is not the condition, but poor performance as a result of the condition, that becomes a problem.

Not a problem, but I strongly urge one who has mental health issues to think really hard about this process, because med school is a furncae. the #1 reason my school loses students to dismissal, failing out, or LOA is to mental health problems.

That's something interesting. Can you elaborate more regarding the types of mental health problems? Are there specific disorders (ADHD, Narcolepsy, OCD)?
