Hi Everyone! So I recently received an II at a school that does MMI style interviews! :) I was wondering, are you typically supposed to fill the whole time given to you with your response or are you usually supposed to leave time open for conversation/discussion/follow-up questions? The internet seems kind of split on this! Thank you!

Don’t stress over this. If you have plenty to say, it’s okay to fill the whole time; if not, the interviewer will be ready with followup questions

Thank you so much! I guess just try to give a full and complete answer but not ramble on if it isn't necessary?

Try to give a thoughtful and complete answer, but don’t worry about filling the time. No bonus points for rambling on.

Hi there! Schools will usually give you anything from 4 to 8 minutes to answer an MMI question at a given station. What’s important here is that you use your time wisely. We think that 4 minutes is enough to provide a complete answer that is strong and effective and that has all the elements that it should include. So, when you practice, aim for that 4-minute mark and make sure you are being concise, clear, and direct. If you take less than 4 minutes, you are probably not structuring your answer very well. If you take more than 4 minutes, make sure you are not rambling on. There’s something called the recency effect, and it explains that people tend to remember what happens at the beginning and at the end of a conversational exchange much more that what happens in between. Sadly, interviewers are not trained to ignore the recency effect, so if you start rambling on by the end of your answer, that is probably what they will remember. As for your question, of course you can use those additional minutes for follow up questions. Your interviewers might have some of you, or they may give you the chance to ask them questions so, definitely, have some good questions ready. Hope this helps and best of luck!
