for US-IMG's:

those of you who performed decently in med school, had average or above avg boards, did electives in the states, yadda yadda . . . did you find PD's amenable to negotiating residency contracts before the match? was the subject hard to bring up? were you denied originally? how persistent did you need to be?

does being a hard-working, articulate, competent person make negotiating/selling yourself easy or at least encouraging, or does the IMG tag still impede?

as always, grateful as hell for sincere and thoughtful replies . . .

Seriously... pre-match you are a replacable commodity. I have yet to hear of a person able to negotiate for how much they get paid before matching (though they might exist and I never heard of them). But I know one person who got a raise 2 months into their PGY 1 year for doing a great job. Also, after you match, if you are that competitive, you can try and get a residency at a different location with a better pay.

NRMP was sued partially about this topic a while ago.

You talking about negotiating better pay? Or being offered a spot outside the match (as an independent candidate)?

Are IMG's the only ones that can get a position outside the match or ALL INDEPENDENT candidates able to do so too?

i was talking just about negotiating outside the match for a position . . .

now that that is clear, any thoughts to the original post?
