question about oxygen consumption

when you calculate oxygen consumption, VO2, do both of these equations give you the same value for VO2?


VO2 = Q(CaO2 - CvO2)

VO2 = VE (FIO2 - FEO2)


Also, when heart rate increases, why does oxygen consumption increase?

O2 consumption increases due to the increase of o2 needed and with increase in heart rate you,providing no abnormalities, have a increased oxygen delivery. You need this so you can have enough oxygen to deliver to the body and tissues. I will have to get back to you on the V02 question. I am not sure i have heard of FE02? you are saying minute volume(VE) x fractional % of 02 minus FE02. i will get back to you.

Consider strenous exercise. That increase in muscle contraction results in a lactic acid buildup. Hence, the increase in oxygen consumption, to convert the lactic acid back to glucose.

Then there is the sympathetic nervous system, which functions in the fight or flight response. Um, exactly what do you mean by "oxygen consumption"? Is this a problem related to the physiology of the lungs, or a problem related to the diffusion of oxygen to cells in a plate of media? From the context of what you write, I would say the former...

yes oxygen consumption goes up as heart rate goes up. This makes sense conceptually, just think about it a little...

yeah i dont understand the physiological mechanism though. how do they relate?

there are so many things involved... i cant figure how they connect

I'm sure you and the others here whom were getting above 30 on the diags will do fine. Like I keep saying, scores are often similar to the diag scores even when those diags seem to be easier. Just keep your fingers crossed.
